Neruda
and literature
Chile
is the land of poetry. Every Chilean person is shy but
passionate at the same time and finds his or her natural
expression in poetry. Probably there is not another country in
the world where poetry is universally admired and practised as
much as in Chile.
Vicente
Huidobro (1893 – 1948), or Gabriela Mistral (1889 – 1957)
both received the Nobel Price for literature and their poems
express a passionate love for their country. Pablo de Rokha
(1894 - 1968), and Nicanor Parra (1914) were also obsessed with
the myth of a country which is still partially unknown. But the
most famous of all is Pablo Neruda (1904-1973), one of the
geniuses of the worlds literatures, who described the beauty of
Chile throughout a series of unforgettable verses.
We
will visit Neruda’s home, and look for the places these
artists loved the most, finding their source of inspiration :
romantic, expressionist, surrealist, or epic. We will meet also
other names, such as Juan Emar (1893 – 1964), author of the
most ambitious novel ever written in Chile in the XX cent or
José Donoso (1924), and Jorge Edwards, crossing the Santiago
they admired or detested. You will find the traces of the mythic
Casa de los espiritus, by Isabel Allende. We will understand the
nostalgia of Sepulveda and Skarmeta for both the Chilean people
and Santiago, as a town which never stopped to change. The tour
will end at a wonderful café literario.
